Champion and Fromm Sever Ties with

By Amanda Epley

After PetSmart’s recent acquisition of, Champion and Fromm are the latest manufacturers to pull products from the online retailer.

In April 2017, PetSmart announced its plan to acquire Chewy, a major e-commerce pet supply company. While Chewy was previously an authorized retailer for several high-quality pet food brands unavailable at large chains, that is no longer the case.

Tuffy’s Pet Foods was the first pet food manufacturer to sever ties with Chewy. As a family-owned-and-operated business, Tuffy’s made the decision to continue to support local specialty pet food stores rather than merely focusing on their bottom line.

In their recent press release, Tuffy’s executives state, “While we have respect for the success and growth witnessed by large and mass retailers, they do not fall within the channels we choose to support with our product and marketing plans.”

Perhaps emboldened by Tuffy’s move and the positive response it has generated, Champion Pet Foods and Fromm Family Foods recently announced their departure from Chewy as well.

Both companies made statements on their Facebook pages about their decision to part ways with Chewy. Champion posted, “For more than 25 years, we’ve been committed to the pet specialty channel. We choose to work exclusively with pet specialists who have intimate knowledge of our foods and are committed to providing expert advice to Pet Lovers.”

The owners of Fromm shared, “Fromm Family Foods is a 5th generation family-owned-and-operated company with a long history of selling our products exclusively to independent pet retailers. Fromm believes our products are best sold by retailers who know our product and can offer pet parents what’s right for their specific dog or cat. As a result of Chewy’s sale to PetSmart, they are no longer an authorized retailer of Fromm Products.”

Within the past few months, three major players in the pet food industry have made bold statements about their business priorities. They have clearly demonstrated that their loyalties lie with local independent retailers that truly care about the health and well-being of pets.

We are honored to partner with manufacturers that are so deeply committed to supporting local businesses. For more information on recent changes in the pet food industry, subscribe to our newsletter.
