Nature's Variety Instinct Formula Change

By Amanda Epley

As a specialty pet food retailer, we are committed to keeping our customers up to date on the latest industry trends. As you may have noticed, the design of Nature’s Variety Instinct packaging has changed.

Dog Food:

Cat Food:

In addition to updating the packaging, Nature’s Variety has also changed the formula of these products:

    • Instinct Original
    • Instinct Raw Boost
    • Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet
    • Instinct Ultimate Protein
    • Instinct Mixers
    • Instinct Frozen Raw

While the majority of these changes are minor, we would still like to bring them to your attention.

For side-by-side recipe comparisons, please visit the Nature’s Variety website. Select your preferred product and flavor, and then click “View PDF” under the product description to compare the previous and new recipes.

Please read the list of ingredients carefully to ensure these updates align with your pet’s nutritional needs. If you have questions about the compatibility of the new formula with your pet’s diet, please contact us or visit one of our stores to speak with a pet nutrition expert.

If for some reason the new formula does not work for your pet, we will gladly recommend another high-quality option as a replacement.

Since the formula change our dog as started itching terribly. From looking at the ingredients, I am thinking it may be the addition of Mehaden Fish meal. Can you recommend a brand without that?

Hi, We’ve been feeding our very finicky 9 year old dog since we got her two years ago. Until the formula change she was doing great, lately her fur and skin have a strong ‘dog’ smell which is new for her and she’s been scratching a lot. Also, we need the food to be gluten free do to an issue one of her humans has. Do you have any other suggestions for gluten-free food for picky, senior dogs? Thanks

Not only the formula changed in Instinct chicken kibble but the weight on the package changed, very sneaky. Think they changed the packaging so people do not notice the ingredient change(which BTY you wouldn’t notice unless you kept the old bag) and the weight difference. Just raise the price, why the ingredients.

    Hi Martha,

We are so sorry to hear that your cat has been having diarrhea. Were you feeding him the kibble, raw, or canned food? If you’re looking to switch from the new Nature’s Variety formula, we highly recommend the Stella and Chewy raw or freeze-dried raw food. It may also be beneficial to add a round of probiotics (Gentle Digest) or some raw goat’s milk.

If you would like to try kibble, the PetCurean Go Duck is very easy on the stomach. However, we highly recommend adding some canned food like ALMO or Weruva. A main concern when cats have diarrhea is dehydration, so a raw or canned diet would help your cat stay hydrated. We also recommend checking with your vet to see if the diarrhea is being caused by a parasite, bacteria, or other medical issues.

If you would like more information, please contact us! Beth, the Store Manager of our Sandy Springs location, is a cat nutrition expert. She would be glad to speak with you on the phone or in person. Our Sandy Springs store phone number is 404-705-8282.

    Nature’s Variety Instinct Formula Change
My male cat had diarrhea for the first 4 years of his life. When I switched to feeding Nature’s Variety Instinct, it cleared up and he has been free from diarrhea for 7 years now. Within the past few weeks, his diarrhea is back. Can you suggest another food (wet and dry) that might work for him now? I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. Martha Ransom
