Tuffy's Pet Foods Parts Ways with Chewy

Tuffy's Pet Foods Parts Ways with Chewy

By Amanda Epley

With the rise of e-commerce and shifts in consumer expectations, the pet food industry has undergone a dramatic transformation in the past few years. Major pet food manufacturers must give serious consideration not only to the quality of their products but also to the implications of their professional partnerships.

Many consumers have recognized the quality of NutriSource and PureVita, two premium brands by Tuffy’s Pet Foods. Founded in 1964 by Tuffy and Kenny Nelson, Tuffy’s Pet Foods continues to uphold the values of a family-operated business. This outstanding company is dedicated to supporting independent pet specialty retailers and family owned and operated businesses nationwide.

Until recently, Chewy was an authorized e-commerce retailer of Tuffy’s products. Since PetSmart’s acquisition of Chewy, Tuffy’s has decided to part ways with the e-commerce company. Although they are appreciative of the relationship they have had with Chewy and respectful of the company’s success, Tuffy’s does not wish to support mass retailers at the expense of local specialty stores. Instead, Tuffy’s will continue to direct their marketing efforts and exceptional products exclusively to independent retailers.

During the transition period, consumers may continue to see NutriSource and PureVita products available to purchase from Chewy. However, these brands will not be offered through Chewy for much longer. Tuffy’s will certainly close their relationship with Chewy graciously while remaining true to the values on which their business was founded. Tuffy’s is not only committed to producing excellent pet food, but they are also dedicated to supporting independent companies that truly care about the health and well-being of pets.

In their recent press release, Tuffy’s President, Charlie Nelson, and National Sales Manager, Dan Schmitz, state, “We plan to continue to do this through our distribution network that features the very finest retailers who we feel have a specialized focus on improving the lives of pets and their pet parents.”

Red Bandanna is proud to be one of the independent retailers with a strong relationship with Tuffy’s. We will continue to carry NutriSource and PureVita products in all seven of our stores. We are also pleased to offer these premium brands online with the recent launch of our e-commerce website. Now, pet owners in our neighborhood can have the convenience of shopping online while still supporting a local business.

Given the recent changes in the pet food industry, Red Bandanna is adapting to shifting vendor relationships and evolving consumer expectations. Our goal is to enrich the lives of pets and their owners in our community by providing exceptional products and partnering with organizations that share our values.
